This unheated cat's-eye sapphire from Yen Bai in northern Vietnam is a cabochon with a pinkish purple crystal, a dark color band and silk lines, and when light is shone on it, a ray of light appears due to the chatoyancy effect.

Star sapphires with six stars are well known, but this piece is a rare stone that features a single cat's eye.

It's not a particularly striking cat's eye, but you can see it at a certain angle even in indoor lighting, and when you shine a light on it, a clear ray of light stands out.

Many cabochon gems like this have a rough finish on the back, but this is a neat oval cabochon with a smooth, shiny finish on both sides.
