This is a Burmese sapphire, a source that is rarely introduced at GTJ, and is a favorite treasure of the GTJ founder.
Sapphires from Burma (Myanmar) are said to be the second most highly valued sapphire source after the Kashmir region along the border between India and Pakistan, and while Burma is famous for its rubies, there are also mines that produce less sapphire than rubies, making them a rare commodity.
This sapphire is a large cabochon measuring over 10 carats, an impressive stone with an isosceles triangular trilliant and pear shape, making it an interesting stone with a unique character.
It contains many iridescent inclusions, and the back side in particular sparkles like the surface of water depending on the angle.
The 120° tilted growth and color bands, which reveal the hexagonal crystal structure, are also visible, making this sapphire all the more fascinating.
Burmese sapphires, which are prone to rutile, also produce star sapphires. When strong light hits them, a cat's eye effect (chatoyancy) can be seen, although it is not clear whether this is due to their shape or inclusions .
Although it is not a very striking feature, it is clearly visible, making it both rare and interesting.
Also, unlike blue sapphires, it slowly fluoresces red when exposed to UV light.
We hope you enjoy this Burmese sapphire, which is full of interesting features.
