Good morning, this is Nori-chan, staff member and loose stone collector.
I'd like to introduce a new item from "Nori-chan's Hand-Picked Selections, Crafted by Representative Illumo" series. (Seeking good names for this series!)
This stone is a Brazilian tourmaline that started at 5.87ct.
Illumo first set three conditions: "must retain 5ct," "utilize the yellow near the culet," and "eliminate any windowing."
To achieve this, he used a fine step cut on the pavilion side to enhance brilliance while preserving the color.
Furthermore, by reducing the table size and increasing the number of facets, he minimized weight loss, eliminated windowing, and further enhanced the brilliance.
The result is a finish that maximizes the stone's inherent beauty.
The original proportions were not bad, but the facets on the crown part were somewhat large, giving the impression that they didn't contribute much to the sparkle. Therefore, Illumo focused on upgrading the crown side.
While carefully preserving the yellow near the culet, the finished product now emphasizes that "magical tourmaline feel."
The scarcity of inclusions, the overall balance, and the exquisite color variation that changes expression between the crown and pavilion.
Achieving such beauty while securely retaining a size of 5ct or more is thanks to both Illumo's precise design and Piachan's skill.
Honestly, it's a secret that I was worried it might lose about 1.5ct (lol), but the cut ultimately created value beyond its weight.
Furthermore, the global demand for tourmaline has been increasing in recent years,
and the price of high-quality pieces has risen significantly.
Especially for stones like parti-colored tourmaline, where you can enjoy the exquisite color, it's almost impossible to find them at their former prices.
In such a market, being able to offer a stone of this class in a size over 5ct is extremely rare.
For me, the elements that determine a gemstone's value—transparency, color, and size—are not additive but multiplicative.
Considering this, this tourmaline is a stone of a class rarely seen on the market, possessing all three qualities.
If it doesn't sell, I'd want to buy it back myself. ...In that case, Illumo, I'll be counting on you! 👋 (lol)
