Origin of the name
In 1878, a Finnish mineralogist suggested that it be named "demantoid garnet" after the Dutch word "demant," meaning diamond, because of its resemblance to green diamonds.
Demantoid garnet is a subspecies of andradite garnet that contains green chromium.
Demantoid garnet was named because its luster and distribution resemble those of diamond, but in fact demantoid has a higher level of fire than diamond.
Demantoid garnets, which have a fire greater than that of diamonds, were loved by Russian goldsmith Carl Fabergé and are one of the "must-have gemstones" for avid collectors.
GTJ offers this demantoid garnet in a gemstone shape (Type 1), which is the pinnacle of luxurious cutting.
Although it has some streak-like inclusions, it is highly transparent and is a masterpiece approaching 1 carat in size.
It is difficult to capture the fire in a photograph, but this is a stone with a strong sparkle and colorful flickering fire.
